Your Houzz: Houzz Mentor Program
Our focus on building the future starts with fostering the talent of our Houzzers through career development programs and classes. One way we help Houzzers grow in their careers is through a mentorship program in which mentees meet with and learn from a Houzz leader from another team. We believe that mentorship is one of the most powerful ways to gain new perspectives, build relationships, and improve communication and interpersonal skills.
For this month’s “Your Houzz” blog series, where we get to know more about Houzzers’ lives both inside and outside of the office, we asked Houzzers to share their experiences with our mentorship program, as well as some key lessons they have learned through the program.
How have the lessons you’ve learned from other Houzzers had a positive impact on you and your role at Houzz?
“The most important lesson I took away is to always listen, and really pay attention to someone when they are talking. I really appreciated how generous my mentor was with her time, and how she would always give me her undivided attention during our catch-ups, allowing me the space to talk through new initiatives and bounce ideas with her. She then would always challenge me to think about the why of something, and to constantly reflect upon what’s in it for others––something that I continue to do to this day.” Rosie B., Workplace Experience
What is one lesson you’ve learned that is applicable to others regardless of your profession?
“One lesson I learned that is applicable to others would be that there is always something to learn. Especially as a people leader. My goal is to continue to learn from my peers and be open to new perspectives and all styles of learning and communication to better myself as a colleague and as a leader.” Brad M., Houzz Pro Sales
What is something that you’ve taken away from the Houzz mentorship program?
“During the Houzz mentorship program, I was able to connect with a leader from another side of the business and found out we have so many commonalities in our teams. This helped us find a connection and go deeper into our reflections on how we can be better leaders since we were managing similar team structures. We both shared tips and tricks we have found success with on our own teams, especially during this remote environment, which was the biggest takeaway for me.” Katharine J., Marketplace
As a mentor, did you learn anything from your mentee?
“Yes, absolutely. It gave me exposure to a different part of the business and showed me that while we all have different objectives and challenges, the way we work through them is often very similar. When we talk about this program we often focus on how for the mentee they are getting broader exposure, however it’s just as beneficial for the mentor to gain more context.” Jessica C., Talent Development
Has becoming a mentor helped you reflect on your own career?
“Absolutely! It’s not often where you take the time to think about where you started and what got you to where you are today. It was an interesting opportunity to tell my own Houzz story and remember my own personal struggles, victories, and when I found who I truly was as a leader. It took me down a road of my own Houzz history that felt like it was long forgotten and made me feel truly proud of what I have accomplished and what more I have to offer.” Chloé S., Houzz Pro Client Services
