Kitchen storage is a priority in home renovations, according to the 2024 U.S. Houzz Kitchen Trends Study*, which found that nearly all renovating homeowners (96%) upgrade their cabinets either completely or partially during a kitchen remodel. The scope of cabinet projects has grown with the share of homeowners opting to replace all cabinets up by 4 percentage points (70%, compared with 66% in 2023), in lieu of partial updates which dropped 3 percentage points (26%, compared with 29% in 2023).

Custom and semicustom cabinets continue to be the top choices for renovating homeowners who update their cabinets with interest in semicustom options rising 4 percentage points, while the share of homeowners choosing stock cabinets declined by 4 percentage points.

Kitchen cabinetry is often equipped with built-in specialty organizers, drawers or trays. In fact, storage features in upgraded cabinets such as cookie sheet organizers (55%), spice racks (44%), and cutlery and utensil organizers (41% and 37%, respectively) are increasingly popular; each has gained 3 percentage points year over year. Many homeowners are making the choice to go with specialty storage solutions like pullout waste or recycling (66%), deep drawers (36%), Lazy Susans (36%) and pullouts or swing-outs (35%) as well.

The addition of a kitchen island offers homeowners a multipurpose opportunity to increase storage, workspace and seating. The preference for a larger island has been growing with more than 2 in 5 homeowners opting for islands that are 7 feet or longer (42%; up 10 percentage points since 2020). Drawers and cabinets with doors are the two most common features in kitchen islands, selected by 80% and 79% of renovating homeowners who are updating their islands, respectively.

Pantry cabinets are also common among nearly half of renovating homeowners (49%) and a growing number of homeowners are opting to renew or add a walk-in pantry (18%, up from 15% in 2023).
